Hy-Rail

The Harsco Track Technologies HY-RAIL® System consists of bolt-on guide wheel attachments which adapt motor vehicles, meeting required specifications, for operation on the highway and on railway track. HY-RAIL® Guide Wheel attachments were developed by HTT (then Fairmont Railway Motors) in the late 1940’s, and have been in production for over 50 years. HTT continually evaluates and improves the product line.

HR1200A HY-RAIL® Guide Wheel EquipmentThe HTT HR1200A HY-RAIL® guide wheel equipment is used to adapt light duty trucks and utility vehicles to highway and railway travel.

The HR1200A HY-RAIL® is a hydraulically actuated Hy-Rail® unit that can be raised and lowered with the use of an electric/hydraulic pump or a PTO driven hydraulic system. The electric/hydraulic pump system can be activated by an on/off switch in the cab and push button switches located at each end of the vehicle to raise and lower the Hy-Rail®l unit.

HR1500AB HY-RAIL® Guide Wheel EquipmentThe Harsco Track Technologies HR1500B HY-RAIL® guide wheel equipment is used to adapt light duty trucks and utility vehicles to highway and railway travel.

The HR1500B is a hydraulically actuated HY-RAIL® unit that can be raised and lowered with the use of an electric/hydraulic pump or a PTO driven hydraulic system.  The electric/hydraulic pump system is activated by an on/off switch in the cab and push button switches located at each end of the vehicle to raise and lower the HY-RAIL® unit.

This unit minimizes the amount of overhang normally associated with HY-RAIL® equipment units on light duty vehicles.  The HY-RAIL® guide wheels are now much closer to the vehicle tires.  Actuating hydraulically allows the HY-RAIL® unit to be mounted more underneath the vehicle and therefore less visible.
Another feature of the HR1500B is the permanently sealed guide wheel bearings.  Maintenance and repacking of the wheel bearings are eliminated. These sealed bearings are currently heavily used in the automotive industry.  Under normal loading and operating conditions these bearings are expected to have infinite life.

The suspension is designed using a rubber elastomer.  It is protected and concealed inside a steel tubular structure.  Once properly adjusted at installation no future maintenance is required.

The HR1500B can be equipped with either rubber tread wheels or steel wheels.  Rubber tread wheels provide the same smooth quiet ride on rail as experience with previous HY-RAIL® units from HTT.

HR3000 Series B HY-RAIL® guide wheel attachment

The HR3000 Series B HY-RAIL® guide wheel attachment is used to adapt medium-duty, chassis-cab trucks, meeting Harsco Track Technologies' recommended vehicle specifications, for highway/railway applications where a vertically-actuating front unit is desired. This unit is ideal for applications where other equipment must also be mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

HR3000 Series V HY-RAIL® guide wheel attachment

The HR3000 Series V HY-RAIL® guide wheel attachment is used to adapt medium-duty, chassis-cab trucks, meeting Harsco Track Technologies' recommended vehicle specifications, for highway/railway applications where a vertically-actuating front unit is desired. This unit is ideal for applications where it is necessary to minimize front end overhang.

Hy-Rail 4000 Series V Guide Wheel EquipmentHR4000 Series A HY-RAlL® guide wheel attachments are also available without the rear unit side-shift feature. Units without the side-shift are identified as model HR4000LT

The front HR4000A guide wheel unit utilizes a "support carriage" concept which uses the vehicle's front axle and spring suspension for on-rail springing and to support a part of the vehicle's front end load during rail operation. When the front unit is lowered to the rail, the "support carriage" (wheels, axle, and support beams) extends underneath the vehicle's front axle and lifts the axle to transfer the front end load to the rail wheels and assure that the vehicle's front tires are safely clear of the rail. In the highway position, the "support carriage" is fully retracted. There is no contact between the front guide wheel unit and the vehicle suspension. All guide wheel unit weight is carried by the vehicle's chassis and is fully sprung, providing excellent ride and control and minimizing any effect on vehicle suspension and tire wear.
